Types of water wells

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 15% of Americans draw water from private wells. These wells are not regulated by the EPA, making them vulnerable to disease-causing contamination.

Your well’s vulnerability to contamination depends on a host of different factors, including its type. The three well types are:

  • Dug – Considered the most cost-efficient, dug wells are wells 10 to 30 ft. below the ground; however, dug wells also have the highest risk of contamination
  • Driven – Driven wells are holes 30 to 50 ft. below the ground and have moderate risk of contamination
  • Drilled – Drilled wells pull water deep from the bedrock 100 to 400 feet below the ground; these are considered the safest of all the three
