According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the drinking water that the City of Temple has been supplying to customers has exceeded the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for total trihalomethanes (TTHMs). TTHMs are formed when chlorine, which is added to the water during the treatment process for disinfection, reacts with naturally-occurring organic matter in the water.
The TCEQ also warned that people who consistently drink water with an excess of TTHMs can experience problems with their liver, kidney, or central nervous systems, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer. The City of Temple is taking the following actions to address this issue:
• Effectively using an alternative disinfection process to remove the natural organic material prior to the water’s introduction into the treatment process flow stream.
• Additional internal process sampling and system flushing on a regular basis will be used to determine best management practices.
