Pollutants in home drinking water have become a major issue over the years. More of our water supply is being found to have pesticides, solvents, radium, arsenic, and pharmaceutical drugs. It is important we all band together to protect our local water supply from these harmful contaminants. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help protect your local water supply right in your own home!
- Do Not Use Your Toilet As A Trash Can
It can be tempting to flush hair, feminine hygiene supplies, baby wipes, unused prescriptions, and other items down the toilet. However, these things can end up in our waterways and oceans. They also contribute to a large amount of waste and the extra cost of cleaning the local water supply. It is better to just throw all these items directly in the trash can.
- Properly Dispose of Chemicals
It may seem easy to pour your paint, old cleaning supplies, or other chemicals down the drain to get rid of them. However, this pollutes the local water supply. It is best to properly dispose of these items. There are several places in the Austin area to take your hazardous waste. They include Austin ReBlend, the Recycle & Reuse Drop-Off Center, and Residential Services. These places will reuse what they can, and safely dispose of what they cannot.
Like pouring chemicals down your sink, pouring chemicals in your yard will cause those chemicals to leach into the water supply. Be sure to take these chemicals to any of the designated spots to dispose of them.
- Use Organic Fertilizers
One of the biggest polluters out there is fertilizers. Many contain high amounts of phosphorus, which runs off into the water supply and contributes to outbreaks of blue-green algae. Organic fertilizers usually release into the environment more slowly and also have a less dense amount of nutrients, making them better for the water supply.
